1. GO HIKING

If your boots are made for walking, there are literally endless trails for you to discover in Nanaimo. Spot sea lions at Jack Point and Biggs Park; see fish swimming up the salmon ladder at Bowen Park; or stroll the boardwalk at Chase River Estuary Park.

2. SNORKEL WITH NEW FRIENDS

The baby seal pups at Snake Island are especially curious to meet you at this time of year, so book yourself a tour and hop on board for a trip to snorkel with the seals.

3. GET STUFFED

Nothing can beat the tasty delight that is the Nanaimo Bar! So take a sweet self-guided tour through Nanaimo’s streets on the Nanaimo Bar Trail. Sample a ‘Death by Nanaimo Bar Martini’ at Bold Knight Steak & Seafood on the Trans-Canada Highway or buy some Nanaimo bar soap at the Island-ish store on Wingrove Street.

4. CRUISE ON A CATAMARAN

Let the skipper do all the hard work as you relax and take in all the sights and sounds of stunning Nanaimo Harbour. Marine Adventures has a beautiful Shadowfax catamaran that has a large deck and netting area, so lying in the sun on the hull net trampolines as you watch the water pass below you is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

5. PADDLE TO THE PUB

Head to the Alberni Outpost Kayak Adventure Centre, rent yourself a kayak and paddle your way to the Dinghy Dock Pub & Restaurant at Protection Island. Order a bite to eat and enjoy the stunning views of Nanaimo and Mount Benson.

6. SEE THINGS GO OFF WITH A BANG

Check out the historic cannon-firing ceremony at the Bastion at noon each day. Nanaimo was originally established as a Hudson Bay Company trading hub, so the 19th century cannons were part of the original defenses. And watch out – because they’re still functional!

7. GO GOLFING

One of the best-kept secrets about Nanaimo is that it enjoys one of Canada's most comfortable climates, which means only one thing for golfers: you can play golf on nearly every day of the year. Add the magnificent scenery and the well-groomed greens - and it’s easy to see why Nanaimo wins the hearts of golfers from across the world. Explore the lush fairways of Fairwinds Golf Club, Nanaimo Golf Club or Cottonwood Golf Club.

If you’re looking for a great hotel near the golf courses, check out the historic Best Western Dorchester Hotel. Situated right downtown near bustling Nanaimo Harbour, it offers excellent views, outstanding service and immaculate rooms and suites.
