FOR PETE’S SAKE! NANAIMO’S TRIBUTE TO PETE SEEGER
Pete Seeger was more than just a musician. He was an activist, a historian, and a beacon of hope for those who seek change. When he died in 2014 he left an incredible legacy of songs, progress and hope.
Seeger was dedicated not only to writing incredible songs that reflected the turbulence of cold-war era politics but also to finding and re-presenting folk traditions from around the world. On May 3, some of Nanaimo’s top musicians will take part in this tradition by putting together an incredible concert full of some of Pete’s favourites. The music of Pete Seeger, and the message that it represents may be more important now than it was in his time – and all that love, urgency and hope will be on stage at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Society. Don’t miss out.
ALAN DOYLE
As one of the lead singers and principal songwriters of Newfoundland Celtic pop group, Great Big Sea, Alan Doyle has made a name for himself as one of the most likeable stage presences in the country. His great, easy smile and his emphasis on mile-wide hooks that will get people cheering and singing along make him one of the most exciting concert experiences you will ever have. See him May 9 at the Port Theatre.
THE TEA PARTY
Back in the 90s, The Tea Party were an essential part of Canadian indie rock. Their dark and brooding sound was an intoxicating mash of all sorts of sounds: South Asian textures, industrial intensity and the mysterious and lush influence of Jim Morrison and The Doors. Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, this Toronto-based band were a constant presence on the national charts. Years later their incredible music has only become more mature and intense, ageing like fine wine. Check them out at the Port Theatre on May 12.
There’s a lot going on in Nanaimo this May! Don’t miss it –
