Top Men have an unusual origin story; they were formed when some of VIU’s jazz students admitted to each other how much they love Daft Punk. Those students then went on to start crafting their own live dance music, bringing top-flight musical training and talent to life! Known for their over the top stage shows (one show featured a 15-foot-tall dinosaur prancing across the stage), Top Men are one of the most beloved acts on Vancouver Island.

KENDALL PATRICK AND THE HEADLESS BETTYS

Kendall Patrick is a songwriter whose crystal clear voice delivers her deeply emotive lyrics with both delicacy and power. Her music is utterly beguiling, romantic, and heartfelt. WARNING: you may fall in love before you leave the show is over.

THE BODY POLITIC

Like your music a little harder? Nanaimo’s The Body Politic have been making metal and turning heads for nearly a decade now. Regularly featured in magazines like The Alternative Press, The Body Politics tight grooves and crushing rhythms hurt so good. Not for the faint-hearted.

FINE

“Fine” is such an ambiguous turn. As the answer to a question like “how are you?” it can either mean “okay” or “terrible,” and often the person responding doesn’t know exactly where they’re at. Fine embody that ambivalence, attacking the 21^st Century with youth and revolution through front-person Max Pittet’s deeply frustrated but still playful approach. Fine isn’t just fine; they’re great.

WIDE EYED

Wide Eyed is the brainchild of lead guitarist and singer Max Fraser. Featuring deep washes of incredible guitar tones, a Wide Eyed show is an absolutely stunning experience – one that borders on physical. Their psychedelic sound is as profound as it is moving, and they’re poised to take the world by storm. Watch out.

WOLF BREWING

This is one wolf you don’t have to worry about letting in – even by the hairs on your chinny-chin-chin! Wolf Brewing is a newer addition to the Vancouver Island brewing scene, but they’ve already made a big splash! Their selection of beers is constantly revolving, but stalwarts like their Scotch ale, which features “hints of toffee, dried fruits, and British tea biscuit” are well worth trying!

LONGWOOD BREWING

Longwood Brewing was founded in 2013, but has since become a major part of brewing in central Vancouver Island and BC! Boasting bold designs and even bolder tastes, Longwood’s Stoutnik Russian Imperial Stout, Steam Punk Dunkel, and Honey Hop Pale Ale are all local favourites.

Calling all self-proclaimed geeks and gamers! M-CON is taking place at Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Conference Centre on September 15 and 16.

This ComiCon-like event celebrates gaming, technology and geek culture with an eclectic selection of tournaments, cosplay contests, video games, panels, collectible card games, board games, role-playing games, miniatures and demonstrations. Here’s what we’re excited about…

1. There’ll be Board Game Tournaments
There will be board game tournaments for Tripods & Triplanes and Wings of Glory WW1 on Saturday; and board game tournaments for Tipods & Triplanes and Wings of Glory WWII on Sunday.

2. There’ll be Plenty of Entertainment
There’ll be video game music mixes from The Runaway Four, role-playing combat demonstrations from Medieval Chaos, a Swimsuit Showdown with Hentai Cupcake Productions

3. There are Some Great Panelists
There’s an impressive line up of panellists at the event, including cosplayer Rusty Bayonet, Overcast Cosplay, Team Criticals and Forever Dreaming Cosplay.

4. There’ll be a Cosplay Contest
Always a highlight of M-Con, this year’s cosplay contest is set to take place on the main stage on Saturday, September 15. You can pre-register online or from 9 am to 10 am Saturday morning. Entries are separated into three groups: Junior (contestants who are under the age of 14 years old), Intermediate (contestants who have participated in two or less major cosplay contests at any convention), and Professional (contestants that have participated in more than two major cosplay contests at any convention).

5. There’ll be Video Game Tournaments
With just one payment of $30, you can enter all of the video game tournaments. This BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, and anyone with a gaming pass can join as many tournaments as time permits. There will be tournaments for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and HearthStone Heroes of Warcraft on Saturday and there will be tournaments for Overwatch and BattleRite.

6. It All Helps the Community
The M-CON Events Society is a non-profit organization that supports youth organizations in the local community. All proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the Nanaimo Youth Services Association.

New Family Summer Activities at Nanaimo Museum

Looking for new ways to keep the kids entertained this summer? Then make your way to the Nanaimo Museum.

New ‘Sea Salt & River Rocks’ and ‘Poetry & Protests’ programs are being offered at Nanaimo Museum for children during July and August.

Designed for kids between five and 12, the programs have been designed for kids to enjoy along with their parents, grandparents or caregivers.

‘Sea Salt & River Rocks’ is a new program with activities to get kids thinking about which animals live where. As Nanaimo is right between an ocean and rivers, it’s a great way to highlight the importance of the local habitat to the kids.

The ‘Sea Salt & River Rocks’ program takes place each Friday in July and August (excluding July 20) from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

The museum’s feature exhibit, ‘A Call for Justice: Japanese Canadian Redress 1977-1988’ is the inspiration behind the ‘Poetry & Protests’ program.

‘Poetry & Protests’ gives the younger children the chance to make a Sakura cherry blossom tree craft, and the kids up to 15-years-old can compose a haiku poem and create a protest sign about the change they’d like to see in the world.

These activities are a hands-on way of looking at a difficult subject in Canadian history while keeping a hopeful outlook to the future.

The ‘Poetry & Protests’ program takes places every Wednesday from July to August from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

The programs are included in museum admission and registration is not required. The activities are offered on an ongoing basis during the program times and take approximately one hour for children to complete.

Admission to the museum is $2 for adults, $1.75 for seniors and just 75 cents for children.

Parksville Beach Festival Goes Wild

The Parksville Beach Festival Society has announced the theme of this year’s Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition.

Set to run from July 13 to August 19 alongside Parksville’s magnificent beach, the 2018 Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will feature a special “Wild Things – from here to the Galapagos” theme.

Festival organizers chose the theme as they believe that taking action to improve our environment locally and globally aligns well with the event.

The five-week-long Beach Festival will feature international sand sculpting, an art show, buskers and free concerts each weekend.

The event begins with the "pound up" on Thursday July 12, when sculptors build and fill their forms. Once their forms are filled and the sculptor feels they are solidly packed, they may remove their forms and begin carving. The public can watch the carving take place beginning Friday, July 13 at 2pm.

Judging takes place on Sunday 15 from 3 to 5pm and the winners will be announced at 5:30pm. The gated exhibition will remain open to the public until Sunday, August 19, from 9am to 9pm each day.

And it’s all in for a good cause. The Beach Festival Society assigns 25 percent of its gate proceeds to community projects and philanthropic groups. Since 1999, the Society has donated $557,150.

Nanaimo Museum Addresses Social Justice & Celebrates Japanese Canadian Culture

A new exhibit at the Nanaimo Museum is marking the 30 years since the Canadian governments official apology to Japanese Canadians following a 10-year fight for redress.

Some 22,000 Japanese Canadians were forced to leave their homes on BC’s coast during World War II. Many were transported to internment camps while the government sold their homes, businesses and belongings.

Their struggle to gain an apology and compensation from Canada is celebrated in A Call for Justice: Fighting for Japanese Redress (1977-1988), a traveling exhibit from Burnaby’s Nikkei National Museum.

A Call for Justice will be exploring human rights and the determination of the Japanese Canadian community until September 3.

“This story is especially relevant on the coast,” says Aimee Greenaway, curator at the Nanaimo Museum. “Friends and neighbours were forced out of the community with little warning.”

The exhibit examines the ten-year fight for redress using historic photographs, artifacts, poetry, personal statements, art and video.

The Nanaimo Museum has also partnered with the Central Vancouver Island Japanese-Canadian Society to lead workshops on traditional Japanese practices.

The sessions are part of ‘Crafternoons’, a new summer program for adults. On certain Saturdays until the end of August, Crafternoon workshops will engage participants in creative, hands-on activities within the museum.

Kim Cowley-Adam will teach Saori handweaving on June 9th from 1 - 4pm, a technique that embraces individualism and mistakes.

Crafternoons will also feature practices from other cultures. On July 7th, Chepximiya Siyam, Chief Janice George and Skwetsimeltxw Buddy Joseph will lead a full-day session on Coast Salish weaving. From Squamish Nation, George and Joseph have been teaching the art of Coast Salish weaving for over 10 years. Participants will create their own weaving, using a variety of techniques, textures and colours.

CONCERTS AT THE VAULT

Last time we told you about some of the great musical events coming up in this year’s Nanaimo fest – here are some of the fun, indulgent activities you can participate in this March!

SCOTCH WHISKEY TASTING

The 16^th annual “Wee Tipple Party” is a celebration of good taste, better whiskey, and the best of company. Put on by the Crimson Coast Dance Society as a fundraiser, this event is catered by chef Ian Ter Veer and features delicious food prepared to match a night of sampling some of the finest whiskeys in the world. If you have any sort of appreciation for Scotland’s greatest export, than you owe it to yourself to buy tickets to this event on March 10 for a truly wonderful evening.

NANAIMO BAR TASTING

A visit to Nanaimo, BC isn’t complete without a taste of this classic confection. Chocolate, custard, and a crumb-based layer combine to create a sweet sensation invented in our own backyard. On March 23, we pay tribute to Nanaimo’s lasting impression on the culinary world by hosting the Nanaimo Bar Trail, a tasting tour that will also guide you through Nanaimo’s scenic countryside! FESTIVAL NANAIMO

Festival Nanaimo is dedicated to showcasing the vast variety of art that Nanaimo produces! A month long adventures that starts March 1, this festival has it all. In their own words:
Festival Nanaimo 2018 includes great entertainment, concerts, theatre, art and crafts, culinary delights, including Whiskey and Beer tastings , historical walks, runs, retreats, Nanaimo's Biggest Dog Photo, St. Paddy's Day, March Break activities including the 4th Annual PirateFest and GeekCon and finishing with Easter Weekend events! And of course a Festival celebrating Nanaimo would not be complete without our namesake dessert - the Nanaimo Bar!
Basically, that means you’re going to find something incredible to do all month long in March! Here are some of the events we’re looking forward to!

ALEX CUBA AND ALEJANDRA RIBERA

Two titans of world music, Alex Cuba is a Cuban-Canadian musician who combines traditions seamlessly into effortlessly sophisticated music, while Alejandra Ribera is a sultry-smoky singer who’s exotic sounds are absolutely intoxicating (I saw her several years ago, and I don’t mind telling you her voice absolutely took my breath away!). Another double bill, this one on March 11, features two BC acts that reflect the diversity of the music scene here. Ann Mortifee was born in South African, and her profoundly moving music reflects her origins, while Rick Scott and Nick Rhodes combine traditional folk music with contemporary beats and sounds that energize their sound. THE BACKYARD FEST 2018

The great thing about Nanaimo is the way that the community bands together, and how you can step out your front door into something creative, vibrant, and fun. The Backyard Fest is exactly that; featuring some of Nanaimo’s best performers, a handful of local crafts and locally made clothing and more, this is your chance to check out the greatest Nanaimo has to offer.

The lineup for this event is still being nailed down, but there are already some really great acts! Check out this line-up:

Kendall Patrick: A singer/songwriter with a gorgeous voice, Kendall Patrick writes sweet, soulful music that will make you sway along. She has a gift for representing the ups and downs of real relationships, artfully weaving tiny narratives that you will instantly recognize. On the 18^th, she will be performing with her band The Headless Bettys.
Believe me, they don’t come more talented or more charming than Ms. Kendall Patrick. Don’t miss out.

The Dog Indiana: I don’t know why, but Nanaimo bands LOVE Indiana Jones. Many of their bands are named after references to George Lucas’ classic films, including local heros Top Men and Ah, Venice. Rockers The Dog Indiana carry on their tradition, referencing the fact that our intrepid archeologist’s beloved nickname came from the family dog. On May 19, they will be playing Soundstage Nanaimo with their trademark fuzzed-out grooves for a good old-fashioned rock show.

And there will be much, much more, including scrumptious eats provided by The Vault, local vendors and more! This is a truly communal event that all are welcome to. Find out more here.

Canada celebrates its 150th birthday on Saturday July 1, 2017 - and Nanaimo wants to party! Here are three fabulous ways to celebrate Canada’s big birthday in the Nanaimo region…

1. Park Life

There’ll be a plethora of fabulous food vendors and a special Shaw Kids’ Zone at Maffeo-Sutton Park. There will be a tonne of entertainment at the park’s Lion’s Pavilion Stage between 10am and 3pm, including sets by Kumbanna Marimba, Purple Pirate and Wunderbread. On the Community Stage between 11am and 3pm you can catch everything from the Bastion City Cloggers and traditional Chinese dancers to Scottish country dancers and ballroom and Latin demonstrations

There will also be a special 150 Celebration Show at the Lion’s Pavilion from 7pm to 10pm, featuring the Canada 150 Choir, Celtic roots band Tiller’s Folly and violinist Calvin Dyck.

2. On the Waterfront

There’ll be a commemorative bathtub run from Nanaimo to Vancouver, leaving the Nanaimo harbour front at 11am; while at the Visiting Vessel Pier, tours of HMCS Nanaimo will be available between 1pm and 4pm. And all the action will come to a magnificent crescendo with a special fireworks celebration at Nanaimo Harbour at dusk.

3. Paddling in Parksville

Just 30 minutes north of Nanaimo at Parksville, you can celebrate Canada Day in a very special way with a paddle off the Parksville shoreline to watch the fireworks from the water. No experience is necessary and the tour includes the services of a certified guide, all gear and full instruction. You can even opt for a double kayak if you want to share the experience. Grab your hiking boots… Mother Nature starts to show off in the Nanaimo area each spring.

1. See the Wild Falls

With its magnificent cliff sides dotted with oceanic fossils, Ammonite Falls is a site to behold. Located in the northwestern foothills of Mount Benson in Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, these awe-inspiring falls are at their most magnificent when the snow is melting and the rain has been heavy. It’s at this time of year that the falls thunder over rocks and the sprays of mist look like glittery clouds floating over the cliffs.

2. Visit the Birds

At the tidal lagoon at Pipers Park you can catch sight of sandpipers, horned grebes, loons, kingfishers, oyster catchers and great blue herons. Take your rain boots with you: the mud and gravel of the lagoon is fun to explore at low tide.

3. Snorkel with Seals

Spring is the very best time to go snorkelling with the seals that live off Snake Island, just a 15-minute boat ride from Nanaimo Harbour. This is also the time of year when you’ll come face to face with adorable baby pups. Nanaimo: More Than Dragon Boats!

Set to take place July 6 to 8 at Nanaimo’s spectacular Maffeo Sutton Park, Save on Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival is set to be a big hit this year.

This is the 16th year that Nanaimo has come together to celebrate one of the most amazing and colourful sports you will ever witness—an event that attracts more than 60 teams from across Western Canada and the United States.

This is Nanaimo’s biggest festival, and for good reason. It attracts more than 10,000 attendees and 1,800 paddlers, and the action is non-stop, with new race taking place every eight minutes on Saturday and Sunday.

The origin of dragon boat racing can be traced to events that took place in southern China over 2,000 years ago. But this festival offers so much more than dragon boat races, there’s also multicultural entertainment, food vendors, and fun-raising events for charities.
