Roughly one hour from Nanaimo in nearby Malahat, BC lies Vancouver Island’s newest and trendiest tourist attraction, the Malahat SkyWalk.

Newly opened in 2021, this spectacular, family-friendly tourist attraction is all about views.

Marketed as “the ultimate natural high,” the SkyWalk is a 600-metre tree walk that takes you to a stunning, 360-degree lookout point.

Wander through the scenic arbutus forest, before being guided up a 32-metre spiral ramp. At the top of the ramp, you’ll find the lookout point, which is 250 metres above sea level.

You can probably guess that the views from the top are nothing short of stunning. Visitors can marvel at Finlayson Arm, Saanich Peninsula, and Mount Baker. You can even spot the distant Coast Mountains on a clear day.

Beyond the lookout point, Malahat SkyWalk guests are sure to love the 165 foot long and 65 foot tall slide that runs from the top to the bottom. Guests over the age of 5 are invited to slide down to the ground floor rather than walk, should they wish to do so.

Wondering how long to spend at this Vancouver Island tourist attraction? The official website recommends allotting at least 90 minutes. This includes the 2.2 kilometre walk to the top, time to take photos and maybe enjoy a picnic from the lookout point, and return to the bottom. Plus, there are shops, a café, and a hiking trail on-site.

The Malahat SkyWalk is currently open every day from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm, with the last admission at 5:00 pm. However, it’s recommended that you check the website in advance of your visit to ensure the hours haven’t changed, as they do change seasonally.

Tickets are available for purchase online (which allows you to skip the line when you arrive) and cost $31.95 for adults, $28.95 for seniors, and $18.95 for children (kids under 5 go free). Annual passes and family tickets are also available.

If you’re visiting Nanaimo this fall, then be sure to take a half day trip to Malahat and explore this new tourist attraction. And if you need a place to stay while in town, you’re always welcome at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel here in Nanaimo.
