Nestled around a lovely sheltered harbour, Nanaimo is British Columbia's sixth-largest city and it’s an absolute delight to discover.

1. Discover Downtown

There’s plenty to explore in downtown Nanaimo, which is divided into three zones: the Old City Quarter, the Arts District and the sweeping Harbourfront Walkway.

2. Coffee and Crabbing

Grab a coffee and take a gorgeous morning stroll along the Harbourfront Walkway, which is popular with visitors and locals alike. It stretches four kilometres from the downtown harbour to Departure Bay. Soak up the views, watch the seaplanes and see the local kids crabbing.

3. Retro Style

Take the 10-minute ferry ride to Newcastle Island. Hike the gorgeous trails and chill-out on the beaches. And for some retro-style fun, check out the concession in the 1930s’ era pavilion. It was originally built by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company.

4. Float in the Pub

Hop on the Protection Island ferry and pay a visit to Dingy Dock, a floating pub. Enjoy a bite to eat and – if it’s low tide – you’ll be able to walk to Newcastle Island.

5. Hikes up Mount Benson

Make your way to Westwood Lake and take the challenging hike up Mount Benson. You’ll be rewarded with great views of the Straight of Georgia and the Coast Mountains.

6. Birds at Buttertubs

Saunter along the two-kilometre-long loop trail at Buttertubs Marsh and you’ll stumble upon observation points and a tower that are perfect for bird-watching. Keep your eyes open for great blue herons, mallards and Canada geese.

7. Tee Off

Due to the region’s particularly temperate climate, there are 19 gold courses within an hour of Nanaimo. Golfers are simply spoiled for choice.
