Nanaimo is a port town that’s right next to the splendour of nature, and you’d better believe everyone here is looking forward to the spring! Winters in Nanaimo are quite mild, but there’s something about the open air of a Vancouver Island mountain looking down at the ocean that makes you yearn for sunlight!
If you need to get out of the house and want to explore the natural beauty of Vancouver Island, here are some of our favourite trails!

COLLIERY DAM PARK TRAIL
You don’t have to leave Nanaimo to go for a great walk! The Colliery Dam Park Trail is one of the city’s most beloved walks, and it’s not far from downtown! This dog-friendly trail gives you a nice long walk without demanding too much effort, though even avid hikers will enjoy its rolling hills! Even better, the dam itself is a good old-fashioned swimming hole! Bring your bathing suit this April if you’re brave enough for a brisk dip!

THE ABYSS
Part of the Great Canadian Trail, The Abyss is also known as Extension Ridge and it’s a TON of fun. Featuring some areas where you’ll need to use chains to help climb steeper rock-faces, this moderately challenging trail is just under 10 km as a round trip but one of the more memorable hikes you’ll ever have!

AMMONITE FALLS
A short hike located just off the Nanaimo Parkway, this area is named for the incredible number of prehistoric ammonite fossils that have been found in its soil! Centred on a breathtaking rainforest waterfall, this is another favourite for locals.

Of course, some of Nanaimo’s best trails are secrets, known only by locals. Book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Inn and our friendly staff will be sure to share their favourite trails!
