All That (Nanaimo) Jazz

Calling all jazz-lovers: The Nanaimo Jazz Festival is coming to town September 21 to 23!
This means that there’ll be a ton of free concerts on Diana Krall Plaza, a fabulous New Orleans-style street parade and plenty of jitterbug and lindy hop to big band sounds. For three whole days and nights, Nanaimo’s downtown will be hopping with the beats and grooves of live jazz.
Here’s this year’s eclectic line-up…

Friday, Sept 21

Workshop with Mingus Dynasty: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm at VIU Theatre
Arrowsmith Big Band: 4:45 pm - 6:15 pm at Diana Krall Plaza
NMA Big Band: 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm at The Dorchester Hotel

Saturday, Sept 22

New Orleans Second Line Street Parade 2018: 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm at Pioneer Plaza
Connor Stewart Quintet: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm at Pioneer Plaza
Astrid Lyre Quartet: 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm at McGregor Park
Sympatico: 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm at Diana Krall Plaza
The Charles Mingus Dynasty Quintet: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm at The Port Theatre
Midnight Jam – Marty Steele and Guests: 10:00 pm - September 23 @ 12:30 am at The Dorchester Hotel

Sunday, Sept 23

Freedom Gospel Choir: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm at Diana Krall Plaza
David Essig’s Blues Story: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Diana Krall Plaza
Victoria Jazz Orchestra: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at The Port Theatre

There are plenty of free events, but tickets for paid shows are now available from the Port Theatre website. These event tickets start at $5 for high school students and run all the way up to $115 for a festival pass.
