Did you know that British Columbia brewers win about one-third of all annual Canadian Brewing Awards - despite the fact that the province is home to less than 20 percent the country’s breweries and less than 15 percent of the national population?

Yes, it has to be recognized that when it comes to beer, British Columbia has a few tricks up its sleeve!
Thankfully, the BC Ale Trail - a self-guided tour that highlights craft brewery destinations and the super, natural landscapes that surround them - celebrates everything that is brilliant about BC beer.

The recommended itineraries on each section of the trail explore the array of craft breweries, pubs, restaurants, cafes, outdoor activities, sightseeing and accommodations.

Nanaimo, with its healthy craft brew scene, is a smoking hot destination on the BC Ale Trail map. Here are just three of the reasons why…

1. Longwood Brewery

Longwood Brewery has just released the uniquely crafted “Island Time Lager” using only ingredients sourced within 20 kilometres of the brewery – the ‘terroir of beer’. Be sure to say hello to greeter Milo, the brewery’s Labradoodle who makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in the door.

2. White Sails Brewing

At White Sails Brewing’s German-style beer hall, you need to check out the Snake Island Cascadian Dark Ale. White Sails encourages you to dine in by bringing your favourite fayre from one of the many surrounding restaurants and pairing it with one of its beers. Sit by the fireplace and soak up the views across to Maffeo Sutton Park. And don’t forget to fill your growler before you leave.

3. Wolf Brewing Company

Continuing south on the trail is Wolf Brewing Company. The tasting room has a warm yet industrial feel. Here brew master Kevin will introduce you to his ‘Old World Style’ of brewing with beers such as the ‘Wee Heavy’ Scotch Ale. They serve up everything from seasonals and specials to small batches. And check out the bottle labels – they’ve all been designed by local artists.
