It certainly is hard to tear yourself away from Nanaimo’s glorious parks, cozy eateries, stunning views and spectacular waterfront, but if you do decide to explore a little further while you’re on Vancouver Island, here’s the lowdown on a scenic shorter drive and a spectacular longer road trip for you to enjoy from Nanaimo.

Drive: Short
Route: Nanaimo to Oceanside
Time: 40 minutes
Journey Highlights: Enjoy endless beachside vistas and make a pit stop at the Qualicum National Wildlife Area. The area attracts millions of birds each year. In the summer you can enjoy a swim, while in the winter you can keep an eye out for Trumpeter swans.
Destination Highlights: When you get to Oceanside you can enjoy the laid-back vacation vibe in Parksville Qualicum Beach and Nanoose Bay. This region boasts some spectacular sandy beaches, some amazing views of the coastal mountain and one of the mildest climates in the country,

Drive: Long
Route: Nanaimo to Tofino
Time: Three hours (without stops)
Journey Highlights: Take the highway to Coombs to meet the goats grazing on the grass rooftop of the Old Country Market. Yes, it’s true. At MacMillan Provincial Park, you should take a break at Cathedral Grove to gaze in wonder at the 800-year-old Douglas fir trees. Soak up lakeside views as you cruise alongside Sproat and Kennedy Lakes and then take in the heady views from 250-metres up scenic Sutton Pass. You’ll then drive right through the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and get your first ocean view at Long Beach.
Destination Highlights: Known as ‘BC’s Surf Capital’, Tofino’s jaw-dropping beaches are mystical and moody. Take a surf lesson, cycle around town or go whale-watching.
