Nanaimo: Four Natural Wonders to Explore this Spring

 

Grab your hiking boots… Mother Nature starts to show off in the Nanaimo area each spring.
 

1. See the Wild Falls

With its magnificent cliff sides dotted with oceanic fossils, Ammonite Falls is a site to behold. Located in the northwestern foothills of Mount Benson in Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, these awe-inspiring falls are at their most magnificent when the snow is melting and the rain has been heavy. It’s at this time of year that the falls thunder over rocks and the sprays of mist look like glittery clouds floating over the cliffs.
 

2. Visit the Birds

At the tidal lagoon at Pipers Park you can catch sight of sandpipers, horned grebes, loons, kingfishers, oyster catchers and great blue herons. Take your rain boots with you: the mud and gravel of the lagoon is fun to explore at low tide.
 

3. Snorkel with Seals

Spring is the very best time to go snorkelling with the seals that live off Snake Island, just a 15-minute boat ride from Nanaimo Harbour. This is also the time of year when you’ll come face to face with adorable baby pups. 4. See the Blue Herons

Each year towards the end of April and the beginning of May, you’ll find the huge nests of the blue heron on Protection Island. The nesting grounds can be found just steps from the Dinghy Dock pub and ferry, and the locals kindly place pots, pans and wooden spoons at the base of the trees so you can make some noise and help to scare away predators.
