Nanaimo and the arts have a profoundly close connection. Visit Nanaimo and you’ll find people of all ages playing music, drawing in sketchbooks, or writing in well-worn notebooks at cafes, on beaches or in their yards. Locally crafted art hangs in nearly everyone’s homes, and there is a vibrant and warm support structure for anyone who wants to follow their vision! This makes is a great place to visit for anyone who has ever fostered a love for the creative arts.
SHANE KOYCZAN
One of the most brilliant, approachable and exciting poets in the world, Shane Koyczan may not be a household name but he has been blowing away crowds all over the world for over a decade. One of the most successful practitioners of “slam” poetry, Koyczan’s poems at times resemble hip-hop, stand-up comedy, and intimate conversations. His craft lies in taking audiences through an emotional rollercoaster where they laugh, cry, and learn to look at life in slightly new, slightly more rich, way. He is one of Canada’s most vibrant artists, and he will be performing at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo on October 2
nd
. Don’t miss out on seeing what may be one of the most profound shows of your life.
LION BEAR FOX
A three-piece folk rock band from Vancouver, Lion Bear Fox (you may have seen them as “The Lion, The Bear, The Fox” or “LBF”) sing soulful, original songs that conjure the best of old-school folk standards as well as the hit sound of recent artists like Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers. Lion Bear Fox features three songwriters who have been touring together since 2012, developing their craft into a cohesive sound that has been entrancing audience and festival-goers all around the world. On October 4-6, they will be playing a limited engagement at the Port Theatre that is sure to unite old fans and new alike!
Want to take part in Nanaimo’s vibrant arts community? Come visit for a while, and when you do
stay at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel
in downtown Nanaimo. Maybe your next inspiration will be the stunning view from our rooftop patio, that overlooks both Nanaimo and the water!
