Nanaimo is widely known as the Harbour City, as it protrudes out into the Strait of Georgia, offering breathtaking waterfront views. As well as being a picture-perfect town, Nanaimo is also known as a cultural capital, drawing in artists, actors, musicians, and writers to call this city their home. In the heart of this creative community is the Port Theatre, a  modern 800-seat venue that has played host to amazing live shows, which include rock concerts, symphony recitals, comedy performances and dramatic plays. This February, this versatile venue gives you 3 great reasons to go to the theatre:

THE LONELY – A TRIBUTE TO ROY ORBISON

Roy Orbison was a true original. His eerily beautiful voice and deep, mournful melodies captured the imaginations of multiple generations, and his music lives on today. There’s nothing like hearing those stirring sounds in a live setting, and you can listen to amazing covers of his iconic songs on February 16 at the Port Theatre, when The Lonely takes to the stage to perform their tribute to this true original!

MAMMA MIA!

Abba is love, Abba is life. They’re also a Swedish quartet who wrote some of the very best pop songs of all time. A beloved global phenomenon that has captured the hearts of over 60 million people, Mamma Mia! is the hit Broadway musical, written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, who based her story on these timeless songs written by members of Abba (Bjorn and Benny). The show is a jukebox homage to their music, where the songs are not secondary to the story, but they help move the storyline along. Overall, this is a feel-good musical about a young girl, Sophie, who embarks on a quest to find the identity of her biological father. All the characters break out in glorious song including Donna, Sophie's mother and the 3 prospective fathers. Groove along to Abba hits like "Dancing Queen," "Super Trouper," "The Winner Takes It All," and "S.O.S.” – this show will leave you with no choice but to dance and sing along! See the hit musical February 26 and 27 when it makes its' stop at the Port Theatre here in Nanaimo!

HERB DIXON

Herb Dixon is one of Canada’s best comics. He started his career back in the 1970s in Vancouver and has been performing all across the country ever since. He won Star Search back in 1994 and is one of the most consistently hilarious comedians working today! See him on his Full Throttle Comedy Tour February 18th at the Port Theatre! Come experience his startingly accurate vocal impression of a Harley Davidson starting up and his hilarious “tell it like it is” style!

Update: Unfortunately this event was unexpectedly cancelled. Please stay tuned for new announcements about exciting things to do in Nanaimo.
