Canada has a thriving arts scene and produces great art that speaks to Canadian across this great land of ours. You can experience some of these classic works in Nanaimo this March, making it the perfect time to plan a trip to Vancouver Island.

FRED PENNER

Fred Penner returns to Nanaimo! One of Canada’s most beloved children’s entertainers, Fred Penner has been leading singalongs for over nearly four decades, both as a touring musician and as the host of classic children’s show, Fred Penner’s Place. Combining incredible guitar playing with a knack for writing songs that speak directly to children without condescending or annoying parents, Fred will forever be known for hits like “The Cat Came Back,” “Sandwiches,” “You Can Do It If You Try” and “Riders in The Sky”! Introduce your kids to this Canadian classic on March 21 at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre!

KIM’S CONVENIENCE

Do you love CBC’s hit sitcom, Kim’s Convenience? Even if you do, you might not know that the TV show was based on an original (and award-winning) play written by series creator Ins Choi, which debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival before being adapted into an award-winning TV show! The original play is maybe even more warm-hearted and hilarious than the show, if you can believe that, and it will be showing March 25 at the Port Theatre in a production by Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre! Follow the family drama and comedy as Mr. Kim grapples with running a neighbourhood convenience store in a changing city while dealing with his second-generation immigrant family!

In our opinion, Nanaimo itself is a Canadian classic. Perched in a gorgeous setting against the sea and Vancouver Island’s lush greenery, it still has the feel of a frontier town while offering great city experiences. Book a stay at the Best Western Dorchester Inn and experience the best that Nanaimo has to offer!
