Although Nanaimo isn’t BC’s largest city, it doesn’t mean we don’t get more than our fair share of world-class entertainment! In fact, Nanaimo can put on a good show. Visit this February to be pleasantly surprised by some fabulous upcoming events.

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS

The Harlem Globetrotters are the perfect combination of basketball wizardry and professional showmanship. Watch them show up their eternal “rivals,” The Washington Generals, as they dunk, jump, pass and shoot with unmatched skill and a special flair for performance. The Globetrotters are on their Pushing The Limits World Tour and Nanaimo is lucky to host them. Catch all the b-ball shenanigans February 2 at the Vancouver Island University Gym! Doors open at 2 pm, with the show starting at 3 pm.

ABBAMANIA

Although Swedish supergroup Abba is no longer recording or performing, their musical legacy lives on. On February 6, make your way to the Port Theatre to experience Abbamania, the world’s premier Abba tribute act. The production has been highly praised by the New York Times for being "vocally superb", and "fantastic" by the Chicago Tribune. The members of Abbamania are from Toronto, and they perform over 200 shows a year for enthralled audiences still nostalgic for the hits. Not only do they sound like Abba, they are dressed from head-to-toe like the legendary group, courtesy of costume designers from the Broadway show Mamma Mia. When they take the stage, you can reminisce to live renditions of timeless tunes like “Waterloo,” “Fernando,” “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me" and many more!

Abbamania will be joined by accompanying tribute acts The Cher Show and Night Fever, a touring Bee Gees show. Take a trip through time and groove to some of the most iconic music produced in the 1970s and 1980s!

MATT ANDERSON

Matt Anderson is an impressive artist. Hailing from Nova Scotia, Anderson is a commanding presence on stage – a mountain of a man with lightning fast hands and an expressive, raspy voice, tapping into something deep and primal whenever he starts playing. He has amassed impressive accolades: 2 European Blues Awards, 3 Maple Blues Awards and the distinction of being the first Canadian artist to receive top honours in the solo/duo category at the International Blues Challenge in 2010. If you’ve never seen him perform, all it takes is one song to become an instant fan; if you’re already a fan, you'll likely move heaven and earth to get to the Port Theatre to see him live on February 12.
