The best place to stay in Nanaimo!

Nanaimo is a wonderful place to live and to visit! While our humble berg isn’t typically thought of as a culinary destination, the proximity to the waters of the Georgia Strait and the wilds of Vancouver Island, teeming with wildlife and wild fruit and vegetables, makes us a favourite spot for chefs from around the world. Here are some of the greatest places to eat if you’re ever passing through!

ASTERAS GREEK TAVERNA

As the temperature goes down, appetites go up! There’s something a cool, autumn day that makes a person crave comfort food – and there’s nothing quite as comforting as Greek food!
Asteras Greek Taverna recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary, and it’s no wonder; this celebrated Nanaimo restaurant is a local institution! Serving traditional Greek fare like roast lamb, souvlaki, calamari and more, this is an astoundingly good traditional Greek restaurant that makes you feel like part of the family. A must try.

MAHLE HOUSE

Technically located in Cedar, a small community just south of Nanaimo, Mahle House is absolutely a beloved part of Nanaimo’s culinary scene. Built into a heritage home with a classic English ornamental garden, Mahle House offers a warm and intimate setting for upscale dining. Their house combinations, like pan-seared Icelandic cod, with pea purée and lemon cucumber salsa, and pan-roasted duck breast with rhubarb cranberry compote, foie gras mousse and potato croquettes, are instant classics and make for a wonderful date night with someone you cherish. Family owned and farm to table, Mahle House is an essential Nanaimo eating experience.

Those are just some of the fantastic restaurants around Nanaimo, but the combination of engaged community and fresh ingredients means that anywhere you go, you’ll find somewhere with great service and delicious food. In fact, if you book a room at the Best Western Dorchester Inn, you’ll find yourself steps from downtown Nanaimo and a world of culinary experiences!
